Be Sure Your Home Is Ready For Spring

  • Be Sure Your Home Is Ready For Spring test

Spring is in the air, and that means more time spent outside doing.  Whether it's spring cleaning, or some outdoor projects, most of us are sure to be spending a lot more time outside in the coming months before summer.   However, spring is typically the wettest season as well, and this can create potential flood situations.  Be sure to read our safety tips below, and contact us if you have any questions, concerns or would like to prevent potential hazards before they occur.

We all know water and electricity don“t mix.  In the unlikely scenario of a minor flood in your home, particularly your basement, it is important to be extra careful.  Here are a couple preemptive steps you can take before a bad storm.

  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) should always be installed in any area of your home that has an exposure to water.  We also recommend installing them in basement areas that could potentially see standing water from a flood.  If you do not have GFCIs installed in your basement, give us a call for a free estimate.
  • Battery Powered Sump Pumps equipped with audible alarms should also be a consideration as you prepare for the wet season.  Having a sump pump installed can greatly reduce the chances of sitting water in your basement during a prolonged period of rain.

In the unlikely event that you do take on some water in your basement, please heed the following:

  • Never try to access your electrical panel if you must stand in any amount of water to do so.  If you cannot access your panel safely, please contact us immediately for assistance.
  • Do not operate or touch any electrical devices when you are standing in water or are wet.

In general, if you are working outdoors, be sure to never operate any electrical equipment in the rain, or if the ground is very wet.

By following these basic safety tips, and being aware of what to look for, you can ensure safety in your home.
